The right label tape can preserve your materials for decades. The wrong tape can ruin them. Here is what matters.
Adhesive type
Look for neutral or removable adhesives. These hold securely but can be removed without leaving residue or damaging the surface. Permanent adhesives are fine for non-archival applications but risky for photos and documents.
Acid-free certification
Acid-free means the tape will not yellow or degrade over time. This is critical for anything touching photographs, documents, or archival materials. If the product does not say acid-free, assume it is not.
Width and length
For photo album labeling, 0.5-inch width is ideal. For document folders and boxes, 0.75-inch gives more writing space. A 36-yard roll lasts through most organizing projects.
Material
Polypropylene is the standard for archival tape. It is durable, flexible, and chemically stable. Avoid vinyl tapes, which can off-gas.
Choose carefully and your labels will outlast the things they are labeling.
